  Introduction

In this place I present some poems.

Here is some of my early work ...

Poems by David Norell

Tide of Love

Solo for two

I have included two early poems I wrote following my participation at an Insight Seminar.  It is clear to see that I was wondrously inspired (although admittedly inadequate to the task of expression) but, nevertheless, much of the legacy of those days remains with me today.  Both Tide of Love and Solo for Two (and Parts I and II of its companion piece Duet for One,  see Prose ) are, more or less, prayers - votive offerings to the beloved.

Tide of Love

Circles and circles and circles of pain

Dizzy with grief and drunk with my tears

Giving is losing and taking is gain

Endlessly, pointlessly wasting the years

A spark is struck in the world of my night

From where from what from whom no name

And I am awake to share in the light

A torch burning bright and crowned in the flame

But I looked for the word to utter my doubt

I fashioned my symbol and token

And all of my days and all of my nights

Are filled with the fears I have woken

And what do I find in the web of my mind

But a thread of gold I have woven

That leads to the hand of the child that I am

To the heart that could never be broken

If once only once I could look in your eyes

And gaze on a face that I didn’t despise

I’d give Oh I’d give you my love with out sum

And I’d take you and show you the one I’ve become

The child of my youth of my joy of my pain

Has sheltered my heart and my love in his arms

And the jewel that I’ve hidden and cried for in vain

Is shining there still on my brow safe from harms

When I take the hand of my child of creation

I’ll sing and I’ll dance with the joy of my birth

And the light in my heart will join nation with nation

And the tide of my love will cover the earth

Solo for two

Before the night and dawn of day

When gods were dreams and life was play

Our father sun and mother earth

In joyful blending gave us birth

Songs of star light fell from heaven

Molten ball that swung in space

All descending condensation

Rained on earth to cool her face

Seas and dry land all were fashioned

By His hand was life ordained

Though His vision clear was shining

Of His image poor likeness gained

Power that strove in mankind's dawning

Wrought the Law for man to keep

Who were perfect in their forming

Now have fallen into sleep

Flying in the face of reason

Yet to folly have we flown

Wisdom's way alas not chosen

The course of common sense unknown

We have broken with our Father

Left our place of peaceful home

And our mother earth enchained her

Lost in silent time we roam

At best we mumble through our story

Blind men tapping out their way

Lest we stumble on our journey

Follow shadows come what may

From the deepest womb of water

Plumb the well spring of our soul

Sip the sweetness of his mercy

Drain the cup that makes us whole

Our lips have formed the song of truth

Have spilled the waters on the vine

Let our singing fill His kingdom

Over flow our hearts with wine

Let the Master shape the making

Give our life to be his clay

Spin the wheel fear not the baking

Blaze the strait and narrow way

Forged be true-sword in His furnace

Kindled from the tree of knowledge

Burn to ashes all that matters

All delusions all that shatters

Draw the breath of living spirit

Toast His loving cup with thine

Sing the song that man has longed for

Stepping out the dance divine
